Raw Food Packaging Celebrates Earth Day

As I celebrate Earth Day, I think about how easy it is to help the planet by eating whole foods aka raw foods. It’s simple, healthy, compostable and does a complete transition from beginning to end though their own renewable growth.

I wanted you to see this video from Sun Chips to encourage you raw business owners to look at your packaging. No, Sun Chips aren’t raw, but they are trying to set a good example of how a mass produced product can have earth friendly packaging. Your raw company can be environmentally responsible and keep you in integrity with creating your raw product. Simplicity is the key to a raw lifestyle and leaving a burden on the planet is not something I want to support, so from now on when I shop for raw food products, you bet I’ll be checking the packaging to see if it has the ability to be compostable.

I recommend as consumers that we encourage all companies to use these practices. I know it may not be cost effective for the small raw startup, but be mindful of the cradle to cradle practice and strive for excellence as we celebrate our planet.

Peace,

Rawma

Is Packaged Food Safe?

I read an interesting article on food packaging and the safety concerns most of us never think about. I have greatly reduced the amount of pre-packaged foods my family consumes, but there are still some valid concerns over what the boxes, bags and wrappers may contain. Here is a portion of the article:

— Packaging Digest, 7/23/2009 3:53:00 PM
Fourteen percent of retail packaging failed a screening test for toxic heavy metals and is likely in violation of state laws, according to a report just released by the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse (TPCH, or Clearinghouse). Imported products using flexible polyvinylchloride (PVC) packaging and the printing inks and colorants used on shopping and produce bags were most likely to contain these toxic metals, including lead and cadmium, known environmental and health hazards.

The report, An Assessment of Heavy Metals in Packaging: 2009 Update, found that lead concentrations detected in printing inks and colorants used on plastic bags were typically 20 times greater than the legal limit established by states. Toxics in packaging laws in 19 states prohibit the intentional use of any amount of lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium. These laws also establish a maximum concentration limit of 100 parts per million (ppm) for the incidental, or unintentional, presence of the four metals combined.

Lead or cadmium were also found in 52% of flexible PVC packaging, mostly imported from China and Pakistan, making these imports the most likely to be in violation of state laws. Flexible PVC, a “heavy-duty” plastic material, is frequently used to package home furnishings, pet supplies, cosmetics, and inexpensive toys. Metals, including cadmium and lead compounds, can be used as heat and ultraviolet stabilizers in PVC resin to control degradation during processing and use.

These findings were based on the screening of over 400 packaging samples using x-ray fluorescent (XRF) analysis by the TPCH, with support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Aside from reading our product lables, it is time for us to all be concious in our purchasing decisions to include the entire process of production before we spend our money and place the food in our mouths.

Do you know what’s in your food? Bugs!

I recently heard a report about an ingredient I never thought to look into. I stopped using products with food dyes a long time ago, but it didn’t occur to me just how many products have food dye in them.

This one takes the cake and makes me want to hurl!

Carmine: also called Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red 4, C.I. 75470, or E120, is a pigment of a bright red color obtained from the carminic acid produced by some scale insects, such as the cochineal and the Polish cochineal, and is used as a general term for a particularly deep red color. Carmine is used in the manufacture of artificial flowers, paints, rouge, yogurt, cosmetics, food additives, and crimson ink.

Carmine may be prepared from cochineal, by boiling dried insects in water to extract the carminic acid.

Carmine is used as a food dye in many different products such as juices, ice cream, yogurt, and candy, and as a dye in cosmetic products such as eyeshadow and lipstick. Although principally a red dye, it is found in many foods that are shades of red, pink, and purple. As a food dye it has been known to cause severe allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock in some people.

Food products containing carmine-based food dye may prove to be a concern for people who are allergic to carmine, or people who choose not consume any or certain animals, such as vegetarians and vegans. Many allergies can occur and some typical symptoms included itching, swelling of the eyes or tongue, difficulty breathing, hives, and headaches.

Getting to the point here, I have to advise myself and everyone else to not just read the labels, but investigate them as well. It’s no secret that we’re being duped, but let’s take a stand and stop buying these items that don’t offer full disclosure of their contents. The producers of these items, are in it for the money, not because they care about us or our health!

Shouldn’t I be able to decide for myself…eat bugs, or not? I choose NOT!

Fundraising: Want vs. Need

Today I was feeling compelled to talk about the things we find that we really want and we work hard to get. You get so close to acheiving your goal, then something comes up and changes your direction.

Want vs. Need. This is where I find myself today. I am very close to having raised all the money I needed to get the Almighty Vita-Mix dream machine. As it turns out, my husband needs some work done on his truck…so, there you have it. I found myself in a dilema. Should I start another fundraising venture for this need? I didn’t mention to him the money I had set aside for the Vita-Mix and I was feeling guilty, then I suddenly realized that I was the one who created this additional money and I could do it again. “Givers gain.” “Money flows to me easily and often”. This is an abundant Universe and I certainly will see the money flow back to me. We need to have the repairs done, but I Want the Vita Mix.

This brings me to the relevance of The RawMa Blog, Raw Food Nutrition and you. You WANT to be Healthy. You NEED to be Healthy. Your body is calling to you to create a sustainable environment for your health to live. You also WANT to enjoy the food that you eat but do you NEED to enjoy it that badly? Ahhh…now we’re getting somewhere.

You have a deep connection to food and it has taken control of your life. More to the point, you have allowed your mind to take control of your decisions. Ouch! That hurts. I know, because it happened to me.

Let me break it down for you. Here is what happened to me and maybe to you also:

Taste Buds and Mind automatic reflex –
WANT: Tasty Food, Chocolate, Sweets, Breads, Pasta, Alcohol, etc.
Feelings: Comfort, Safety, Peace
Results: Momentary bliss…then
bloating, guilt, weight gain, more guilt, discussions about it.

VS. NEED
Nutrition
Balance
Happiness
Peace
Resolved inner conflicts

Do the right thing for yourself. You deserve to live a long, happy life. The sacrafice you make today, could result in years added to your life and a ton of happiness and self-satisfaction knowing that YOU…ALL OF YOU – BODY-MIND-SOUL control your actions. You do not need to REACT to events around you. simply observe and let the good stuff stick to you as the bad passes you by. Do Not Engage in the Drama and it will not seek you out. Think about your wants and your needs then apply them to your life. Success can be yours.

Blessings,

RawMa

Raising Money Part II

I’m still working on raising money for the almighty Vita-Mix. I’m doing pretty well with it. I’m up to $210 so far. I’ll be making better Green Smoothies and Almond Butter in no time!

Speaking of SuperFoods, I have the dehydrator working overtime this evening. There is a tray of Sun Burgers, a tray of onion bread, a tray of Almond Bars and A tray of Apple cookies. All Raw of course. I can’t wait to eat tomorrow.

These recipies were really simple and only took a few minutes each to prepare. The key to staying raw for me is to make it as easy as possible for those moments when I am really hungry. If there are a few items prepared ahead of time, I am more likely to grab them instead of something un raw and unfood like. No nutrition, heavily processed food shoved into my mouth unconciously used to be my way of life, but I am living much more mindful these days and I sincerely hope you are too. Times are a changing and we must as well if we will intend to have a bright future that we control.

Blessings,

RawMa
